Many WordPress themes take advantage of this feature and it will create new image sizes. The main problem here is these images are generated only after activating the theme.

Since the existing images size may not fit into the new theme and you might require the new image altogether. To solve this issue you need to regenerate all the images according to the theme’s image size. To perform this activity there is a simple plugin called Regenerate Thumbnails.

Install the plugin Regenerate Thumbnails and activate it. Upon activation navigate to Tools » Regen. Thumbnails page.

You will see the button with name Regenerate All Thumbnails. Click on the button to start generating new image sizes according to your theme settings. You could also regenerate thumbnails individually from the Media Library page.

By regenerating the images into the new size it will not affect your original images. It will create an additional copy of the image with new dimensions. It will not delete any of the existing generated images in the upload folder. You may have to manually delete the existing images in case if you don’t need it anymore.
